Things to Consider Before Hiring a Contractor
Hiring a contractor for your home remodel is a big decision. After all, the contractor you choose ultimately makes or breaks the entire project. When going through the process of who to select, consider these four points before making your decision. It is important to consider your choice from several different angles, seeing as the contractor you pick determines the timeline of your remodel, and the overall quality of the work being done. Throughout the process, it is important to listen closely to how the contractor answers your questions. If you have issues communicating with them initially, that isn’t the best sign of how you two will work together moving forward with the remodel.
1.) Ask How Long the Contractor Has Been in Business For
If you choose to go with a contractor who has been in your area for over a decade, then they have a local reputation to uphold. They likely have an established network of connections with suppliers and subcontractors as well. Ask for references from some previous clients.
2.) Request a proposal and contract
Paperwork is an important part of the project. You will want a proposal with the price of the project, drawings and detailed description of the work. Minor things can change along the way, however, whether it be unforeseen rot repairs, or changes to the finishes included. Be sure to get a change order so the homeowner and contractor are in agreement about the change.
3.) Meet the project manager
While choosing the right contractor is a major decision, most of them aren’t the ones actually performing the work on your home. The one working on your house every day is the project manager, making them one of the most important people on the remodel team.
Deciding who will be the team to tackle your home project is a tough decision. Keep some of these points in mind when going through the process.
